3 Things to Look for in Garage Shed Windows

A garage shed is a useful addition to your home. These structures give you somewhere to keep your car secure but also have extra space. You can use this space to create a workshop, tool store or storage area.

If you'll use your garage for more than vehicle storage, it pays to add a window or two to the build. This gives you some natural light if you're working in the shed; windows also help ventilate the space.

However, you should make sure to choose the right windows for the structure. Which features are good to have?

1. Strong Security

If you add windows to a shed, you create possible access points. So, you need to make sure that any windows you do install are secure and safe.

You do need to use windows that you can lock when they are closed and you aren't using the shed. Windows should also fit tightly in their frame and be made from robust materials.

It's worth looking out for frames that have beading that goes over any fixings like screws. Beading hides the screws and keeps them away from anyone who might try to use them to remove the window to gain access.

2. Appropriate Opening

You may not think much about how a garage shed window opens; however, this does matter. If you have windows that open inwards, then you might accidentally walk or drive into them. This causes damage.

Windows that open out are a better choice. This takes the open part of the window out of the shed and out of the way. Ideally, look for products that will stay open without being blown shut if the wind picks up.

Sliding windows are a good choice, especially if you don't have a lot of spare space in the shed. They open and close within their frame, so they won't get in the way. You control how much you open the window at any given time. Sliding windows also won't blow shut.

3. Protective Glass

If you use regular glass on your windows, then they will let in light. However, this light might be a problem. If it is unfiltered, it brings harmful UV rays into your shed. Anything in direct sunlight could fade.

UV-blocking glass should filter these rays out. Tinted glass also reduces glare and some incoming heat.
